Research Consortia are umbrella programs between the 4 in 1 universities for the showcase of the Center of Excellence for Tropical Studies. This consists of joint research and mobility on the related consortia programs.

To align with the specific objective of becoming a Center of Excellence for Tropical Studies, Mulawarman University proposes 22 new PhD scholarships under the project of IDB. The scholarships are divided into two destination countries, that are ASEAN (Thailand and Malaysia) and non-ASEAN countries (Europe, Japan, and South Korea). To have an objective selection process for the candidates, it is required to have a bridging program consisting of 36 PhD candidates Mulawarman University had previously run two batches of the similar bridging program with strict standard, thus Mulawarman University were able to send the staffs to various scholarship with successful rate of more than 50%. The intended courses are in agriculture, forestry, life science, technology, public health, pharmacy or medicine, or other hard sciences. The outputs of these activities are (1) number of PhD scholar increases from 221 to 243 PhD holders, (2) number of qualified PhD candidates increases by 40 individuals, number of certified individuals including lecturers and technical staffs by 16 individuals, and (3) number of recharged lecturers by 13 persons.


The outcomes are increasing teaching and learning quality as well as research and innovation quality measured by incremental increase in research outputs (publication and citation) and reducing waiting time of the students. The impacts are increasing quality, relevance, and competitiveness of the higher education in Mulawarman University.

Mulawarman University, in the light of this project, is aiming to refresh, develop, and adapt the curricula to meet with national and regional standard. The curricula development will go through several steps of (1) technical assistance, (2) comparative study, (3) needs analysis for the on going curriculum, (4) university-wide workshop, (5) Main Scientific Pattern curricula development workshop, (6) standard curricula development workshop, (7) teaching material workshop, (8) teaching method workshop, (9) evaluation instrument workshop, (10) review and evaluation workshop, and quality assurance instrument development workshop.


Expert from overseas university will assist the curricula enhancement, since both universities have previously collaborated closely with Mulawarman University in the multi-discipline field of research in tropical science themes. The outputs expected from these series of activities are 15 sets of refreshed and adapted curricula. The outcome of the activity is increasing quality of teaching and learning, while the impacts are (1) 35,000 students will have access to new curricula, (2) teaching and learning meets the relevance and quality of national and regional standards, (3) therefore, the competitiveness of the fresh graduates after ten years since beginning of the project is increased measured by reduced waiting time period, increase in first time salary of the graduates, while proportion of graduates with GPA more than 3.00 is also increase.

This program will be announced in April 2016 and the proposal submission will be in September-October 2016.
in 2017, twenty best research proposals will receive funding from this IDB-Loan Program. The expected output is minimum article submission to nationally accredited journal, preferably to international journal (EBSCO/Copernic/Proquest/Scopus listed publisher).

The main idea of the research consortia activity is to be the culmination and showcase of all centers of excellences that are collectively disseminated and progressed among the 4 in 1 universities’ initiative. In this regard, activities are tailored to provide regular forum from each university to interact, discuss, share idea, and collaborate in research. Within the umbrella of 4 in 1 university, the research consortia program flows from establishment workshop, proposal development for joint research workshop, collaborative workshop with other 3 CoE hosts, hosting fellow researchers while attending research forum, providing grant for research implementation, conducting research monitoring and evaluation, conducting joint seminar and publication, attending collaboration seminar at the other 3 CoE hosts, providing grant for joint IPR (i.e. book publication), and providing budget for collaborative prototype submission.


The outputs expected from these activities are 5 units of IPR (i.e. book publication), Scopus-listed proceedia at least for one collaborative seminar, one prototype submission, and four seminars. The outcomes from the activities are increasing quality of research and innovation and better network to at least four aspects of tropical studies, educational innovation, biotechnology, and food security. The impacts are (1) giving access to researchers to collaboratively conducting research, (2) sharing relevant experience among the researchers and students in the 4 in 1 university i.e. reciprocal expert teaching and student exchange, (3) increase quality of research by having a larger group of network and sharing facilities, (4) therefore, increasing competitiveness by gaining experience in conducting regular collaborative seminar and publishing Scopus-based proceedia.

3. Lokakarya penyusunan proposal untuk penelitian bersama dan partisipasi kolaboratif di 3 CoE lain (workshop networking),
4. Penerapan program inbound mobility pada forum penelitian,
5. Hibah untuk pelaksanaan penelitian,
6. Monitoring dan evaluasi penelitian,
7. Konferensi kolaboratif di CoE,
8. Seminar dan publikasi bersama,
9. Hibah Uber HKI, dan pengajuan prototipe.
